Chapter 9

“What do you mean under attack?” Asta asked, and her voice was high-pitched with panic. “Asgard? Attack from what? Who would be dumb enough to attack Asgard?”

“There’s only one way to find out,” Eira said, and she drew her sword.

“She’s right,” I said. “Get ready.”

“Okay, okay,” Asta said, and she took a deep breath and then pulled her axe off her hip. “I’m ready.”

“This will protect you,” Ramir said as he slipped the dark purple amulet over Kas’ neck. “There’s no time to waste. People may be in danger. Now, go!”

I took off toward the front door, and a second later, Blar landed on my back. The dragon might be a sleepy, hungry little creature, but he knew when it was time to be serious, and I could always count on him to show up when he was needed.

The chime above Ramir’s door dinged as I whipped it open and rushed outside, and the sound of the small bell mixed with the loud clanging of the larger one as it rang out again.

“Someone must be in Asgard,” Eira said.

“There!” Kas yelled and pointed to our right.

A group of eight or nine large men in deep red tunics made their way down the street where all the shops were, and shopkeepers ducked beneath their counters as the men hurled axes or smashed their blades into the wood of the booths.

“Who are they?” Asta gasped. “Why are they doing this?”

“It looks like--” I started to say.

“The Crows,” Eira and I finished together.

“Yes,” I agreed.

“Are they a rival warband?” Kas asked.

“That’s right,” I said through gritted teeth. “The nastiest and meanest of them all. No matter how many times we take out their fighters, they seem to always have more.”

“They’ve never come into Asgard before, though,” Eira said, and her green eyes flashed to mine.

“They are today,” I said, and I took a deep breath and then looked at each of my women in turn. “Let’s go!”

I let out a loud war cry as I rushed toward the group of men coming down the street. They were attacking innocent people, and we didn’t have any time to waste. Most of the shopkeepers weren’t armed, and even if they did have a weapon to defend themselves with, they probably didn’t know how to use it properly. Either that, or they were too terrified at the moment.

And I couldn’t blame them. These arseholes were scary-looking, and they were big. The largest one was at the front of the group, and he was at least my height, if not taller, and built like a fucking tree. The man had a huge chest, large hands, and a sword half as big as he was, and a strange, ornate tattoo sat over his right eye and made its way down his cheek and neck all the way to his shoulder.

The sonofabitch gritted his teeth when his dark brown eyes locked on me, and his body tensed, which told me he was rearing for a fight.
